Recovering
FileMaker files on systems with large numbers of files or
large files can be improved by employing some simple tips.
Fast and powerful systems make the most significant
difference in the the speed of file recovery. When doing a
complete system recovery we may have as many as 10 or more
computers all working simultaneously to expedite this
cumbersome process.
When recovering a large number of files or several large
files, follow recovery steps up to step 10. However,
instead of recovering all the files using your FileMaker
server we are going to copy files to other systems on the
network.
1) Copy files to your fastest client computers, open
FileMaker Developer and perform the file recovery on the
client computer. It is best to save the recovered file to
the local computer versus across the network back to the
server.
2) After recovering the file, rename it and perform File
Maintenance.
3) Copy the file into your “Completed” folder on the
FileMaker server.
4) Repeat these steps on as many computers as are
available. However, reserve your fastest servers for your
largest files. Files over 1MB could take as long 2 hours to
recover.
My last file recovery on 27 files, using 10 computers took
12 hours. Our fastest system is a dual Xeon PowerEdge with
4GB of RAM and RAID disk subsystem. Apples work well on
file recovery and it’s not a bad idea to bring in systems
from home or friends to help speed along the file recovery
process.
